As the war on the opiate epidemic continues, many addicts are turning to IV use of heroine.  This has caused a spike in the spread of contagious diseases, including HIV and Hepatitis C.  The LMA is working with the Louisiana Department of Health to develop educational materials and model protocol pertaining to the development of local needle exchange programs.  Such programs not only protect law enforcement and first responder personnel, but they also provide a valuable opportunity to connect addicts with available treatment resources.  Read more about the need for these programs HERE, and stay tuned for more news as the LMA/LDH collaboration continues.
